Brief: Climate Solutions and Dilemmas in the AI Power Boom - A Lifeline for Carbon Capture?
Author: Lew Daly
Given data centers’ typically high capacity and around-the-clock electricity demand, the gas power buildout tied to data centers threatens to have a significant impact on national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Could the data center electricity boom be the problem that finally gives legitimacy and a bankable purpose to carbon capture in the fight against climate change? This question is already on the table and making headway in the data center landscape. Whether the answer is yes, no, or somewhere in between, it cannot be right if we aren’t also asking why CCUS should be encouraged at all.
